GO LOKO
Research
We used a variety of research methods to inspire our design. These include conducting interviews, building an affinity wall, reviewing related literature and analyzing comparable systems.
Interviews & Analysis
We interviewed potential users of our system to learn about their goals and understand the current rehabilitation process.
-
5 current and former patients discussed the personal experiences in rehab
-
2 physical therapists walked us through the rehab process
-
2 movement researchers explained current attitudes and trends in the field
We analyzed our interview data by buliding an affinity wall.
Literature Review & Competitive Analysis
We reviewed industry reports and academic literature to assess:
-
The current strengths and weaknesses of motion-sensing technology
-
The process of physical rehabilitation and where improvements could be made
-
Exercise standards in rehabilitation
-
How to motivate patients to complete exercises at home
-
How to provide meaningful feedback and positive reinforcement
-
The successes and failures of comparable technology solutions
Learnings
Our analysis motivated several key design decisions:
-
Patients should strive for salient, not virtual, rewards
-
Patients should receive continuous feedback from the system to they can understand if they are doing the exercises correctly and if they are making progress
-
Patients and therapists should be able to easily see progress against key milestones
-
Data should be easily accessible, understandable at-a-glance, and useful for making treatment decisions
